PUB culture is an integral part of British life as we all enjoy sitting together and chatting, watching sports, birthdays, and much more, all of which takes place around a pub table.

In Taunton it is no different; there is a wide range of pubs for the public to enjoy food, unique beer and cider and meet friends.

Recently though, we asked our readers what the best pub in Taunton was.

Safe to say, we still don’t know. There seems to be a lot of pubs in the area that the public like.

The Flying Horse and the Princess Royal seemed to be commonplace in the discussions though, so let’s start there.

“Nestled in the heart of Taunton, The Princess Royal Inn provides the perfect setting to get together, our warm and traditional pub offers the perfect oasis for the whole family.”

That is what their website states, and that was something that a lot of the pub agreed with.

One reader said it was a ‘good pub with a good atmosphere’.

Another heavily upvoted pub was the Ring of Bells on St James Street in town – not to be confused with the Ring of Bells Inn in Norton Fitzwarren, it too had some top reviews mind.

As well as being a stone’s throw from the Cooper Associates County Ground, the Ring of Bells on St James Street is well known for its selection of real ales and ciders.

Trevor Challenger said it is the best pub in Taunton “by a mile”.

Somerset County Gazette: The Ring of Bells in Taunton. The Ring of Bells in Taunton.

The Ring of Bells Inn in Norton Fitzwarren was praised for its food as well as atmosphere.

Lisa Jayne Pearn said: “great food, great service, great company and amazing takeaways and carvery’s”.

Moving on The Cricketers and The Plough Inn, both of whom are under new management as of recent weeks.

Helen Thorn said The Cricketers was her favourite pub now it is under new management.

And Kay Armstrong gave a clear reason why she things The Plough Inn is the best in town: “it’s a great real cider pub”.

Some honourable mentions were given to Shepherd’s Rest, The 68 Club and both of Taunton’s Wetherspoon pubs Perkin Warbeck and the Coal Orchard.

But as already mentioned, it seems we are still not sure which is the best of the best, perhaps Taunton has a pub for everyone.
