Dear Editor,

Please may I be permitted a few inches of your column?

Your regular correspondent is now batting for Polanski and the Green Party, which is no more green than I am.

It is plain, unadulterated Marxism driven by hatred.

There are few rich people left to tax.

They have left the country.

Fifty-two per cent of our residents now take more out of the system than they pay in.

This is not financially viable - no socialist system is.

Moreover, we are mortgaging our children's and our grandchildren's future to pay for this fantasy life.

Help is not reaching those who really need it.

Is that morally responsible?

Since 2015, this country has been voting for a change in the system.

They can see it is broken even if those in charge cannot.

The latter arrogantly assume they are able to fix it.

They know better!

It is not fixable.

Power and control have leached, if not actually been given away, to other bodies and institutions, national and international.

What we are seeing here is a breach of what is known as the social contract: the idea that the power of the government is only legitimate if it is based on the voluntary consent of the people.

The latter exchange some limits on their individual freedoms in return for security and order.

Where is the security and order?

But, "societies collapse when leaders undermine social contracts."
