CUBS across Somerset celebrated the 75th anniversary of the cub scout movement by going in to school in their cub uniform and a special Promise Day badge, in the week of December 20, 1991.

Taunton's own district celebration of the event was held at Ladymead School, starting with a service for the Cubs followed by an open evening of entertainment.

Former Cub leaders were invited and one lady member could actually remember the 25th anniversary of the movement.

During the evening a cheque for more than £200 was presented to Guide Dogs for the Blind, which, along with the Looking Glass Appeal for the Royal National Institute of the Blind, has been supported by the Cubs during their birthday year.

Assistant county commissioner Marian Scott said: "We have had a lot of events over the years, but this was the culmination, being our true birthday.

"Things are looking very positive for the movement in the future."
