Skittlers from the Watchet Wansbrough paper mill proved it truly was a case of to become a World Record holder was a marathon and not a sprint.

This was in the days when a Marathon was not a Snickers and you had to have dedication to be a record breaker.

In this week's Looking Back, we celebrate the skittlers success as in the Somerset County Gazette of march 13, 1992, we reported how they toppled 82,500 pins in 24 hours to enter the Guinness Book of Records.

The team of eight mill workers beat the then record held by the Clarence Hotel, Portishead, by an astonishing 4,277 skittles being knocked over.

All the money raised by the team went towards the Musgrove Hospital baby care unit and Southmead Hospital children's renal unit at Westbury-on-Trym.

Speaking in 1992, Edwin May said: "This was the follow up to our first attempt last October when we reached 75,453. We has a tough job and we wouldn't do it again but it was worth the effort."

Mrs May paid tribute to the band of supporters including tireless stickers-up lead by Darren Towells and Darren May.

The marathon was started by the then BBC Somerset Sound presenter Sheelagh Leigh-Ewers.
