It is that time of the year when a select band of dog owners paws for what they hope will be some applause when their favourite canine takes part in Crufts.

This year the world famous dog show is being held at the NEC in Birmingham.

As a reminder of triumphs past, this week's Looking Back recalls how one lucky girl from the South West was a winner at the show.

In the Somerset County Gazette on March 14, 1997, we reported how years of dedicated training for Minehead school girl Carolyn Woods along with four year old border collie, Fly, won the national junior dog obedience competition at Crufts in 1992.

Carolyn and Fly represented the South West, won the title after a run off with a member of the Scottish Team.

In the edition which came out on March 14, 1997, Carolyn's father, Clive Woods, said: "They have worked really hard to get this far. Every one is really proud of the professional way she and Fly go about things - something for which their trainers deserve tremendous credit."

Apart from her individual performance, Carolyn, a then student at West Somerset Community College at Minehead, helped the South West team to its best success in the competition with fourth place.
