A TAUNTON Bobby who has made his community safer has received a top award from his boss for services to the community.

PC Stuart Curtis received the Ray Robinson Award from Chief Constable Colin Port for his work in increasing community involvement and reducing crime in Monkton Heathfield and the Priorswood area of Taunton.

The accolade is given annually to an Avon and Somerset officer who has gone above and beyond the call of duty to solve problems in communities and show innovation in an areas policing.

PC Curtis, who has been beat manager for more than three years, helped set up Monkton's Local Action Team, which has become one of the most successful and vibrant in the Taunton sector.

His work with local schools was commended - he arranged a drop-in centre where young people can discuss problems and deal with any issues.

Other successful projects managed by PC Curtis include a football team for local youngsters and gaining a dispersal order to prevent youths gathering and causing distress to local residents.

Somerset West District Commander Ch Sup John Snell said: "The fundamental principles of community policing always remains constant with Stuart.

"He appreciates the need to be accessible, approachable, innovating and caring and he takes time to understand and assist vulnerable members of his community.

"It's also worth noting that despite the abundance of beat commitments, he frequently volunteers to help colleagues.

"Congratulations go to him on receiving what is a very important award."
