A RETIRED head teacher has expressed concern over the number of betting shops in Taunton.

Dave Dibb, 59, says they attract the vulnerable who see gambling as a potential quick fix to financial difficulties.

He spoke out after bookmaker Paddy Power lodged an application to open in North Street – becoming Taunton’s eighth bookie if approved.

The London-based company has applied for a betting premises licence to Taunton Deane Council and will occupy the former Game shop.

“I think it is a major concern,” Mr Dibb, of Geoffrey Farrant Walk, told the County Gazette.

“It is going to make the vulnerable people of Taunton susceptible to the influences of gambling.
People are looking for a way out of their financial difficulties and they want a quick fix.”

Mr Dibb, who is not a gambler himself, says better counselling services should be available for gambling addicts.

“It is as bad as alcohol and drug addiction. People get into debt and then loan sharks come after them.”

Mr Dibb says he would like to see local authorities take steps to control the number of betting shops in any one community.

A spokeswoman for Taunton Deane Council said: “According to our database, we have 10 betting shops in the district, including the new one, Paddy Power. Eight of these are in Taunton.”

Campaigners claim The Gambling Act (2005) makes it nearly impossible for councils to refuse applications for new betting shop licences.
