SOMERSET’S connections to Jane Austen’s England will be revealed in an illustrated talk by best-selling authors Roy and Lesley Adkins.

The pair, who have written ‘Eavesdropping on Jane Austen’s England: How Our Ancestors Lived Two Centuries Ago’ will separate fiction from fact to present a true picture of England that is far removed from the tranquil country described by the great female novelist.

The Adkins have uncovered many true stories from the period when Jane Austen lived from 1775 to 1817, including one about Jane’s aunt who was imprisoned for shoplifting from the Great Hall of Taunton Castle.

Their book was compiled using resources from the Somerset Heritage Centre as well as eyewitness accounts.

Cabinet member with responsibility for Heritage, Cllr David Hall, said: “This is certain to be a fascinating insight into life during Jane Austen’s time with so many connections to Somerset.”

The talk will take place on Wednesday, June 19, at 7.30pm at the Museum of Somerset in Castle Green.

Tickets cost £8 and are available from the museum or call 01823-255088 or email museumofsomerset@somerset.gov.uk
