BIG-HEARTED villagers in Kilve have rallied together to keep the spirit of Christmas alive.
They put their hands in their pockets to bail out village husband and wife pensioners after they lost a purse containing £300.
The pensioners, who have asked not to be named, had collected their pension, along with their winter fuel allowance before stopping off at the village store, only to find the purse missing.
Robbie Rutt, who lives in the village, said: "I was tipped off about their plight by our local postman, Paul Smith.
"The couple were naturally devastated.
"I knew people in the village would hate anyone - let alone two elderly people - to have little or no Christmas cheer in their household, so we set up a fund to for those who would like to help with contributions.
"Paul delivered a leaflet explaining what had happened with the post the next morning, inviting contributions to be left at Kilve Stores.
"We had matched the missing money within 48 hours."
He added: "It was a wonderful example of true Christmas spirit, and a shining example of what village life is all about."
