MINEHEAD FC chairman Bryan Leaker has resigned, saying the town council failed to back a rescue plan for the club to the hilt.
In a dramatic message to Minehead town councillors, who debated the plan on Monday, Mr Leaker told them: "Back my rescue plan in its entirety or I'll walk away."
Yesterday, he did, after just six weeks in the job, saying the council had failed to give enough of a commitment to enable the club to pursue grants for improvements.
The Mayor of Minehead, Cllr Ann Foxhuntley, has said the council could not make major commitments to the club with local elections, due in May, so close.
Mr Leaker had asked the council to approve an ambitious package designed to turn the fortunes of the ailing club around and pull it out of its £23,000 debt.
