DRIVERS who speed past a Wellington primary school are being urged to slow down.

Cllr Andrew Govier says concerns have been raised by home owners on Wellesley Park and Hoyles Road, near Wellesley Park Primary School, and is urging motorists to curb their speed.

Now, a device warning driver’s of their speed will be placed along the stretch of road to stop them travelling too fast.

Cllr Govier said: “The school being there is one of the main issues. There are a lot of kids and unlike most schools there is no 20mph limit outside it or lollipop lady.

“Hopefully doing this will make drivers think twice about their speed and slow down.”

Cllr Govier met with traffic engineers at the site to look at a possible solution to the problem.

As a result, Somerset Highways is putting a temporary speed indicator device on the road on today (October 21).

It will be there for two weeks and will record traffic details, including the number of vehicles and speeds, 24 hours a day.

The data will show actual traffic speed – as the device captures the speed before the driver activates the device – and not the driver’s ‘adjusted speed’ once alerted to it.

Cllr Govier added: “It has been an issue for a number of years there because it is a long, straight road.

“When I was up there a woman said she put together a petition a couple of years ago but it didn’t really go anywhere, so now this is an opportunity to look at it and see what we can to do stop it.

“I can apply for two schemes through the county council so it may be that we look at things such as pedestrian crossings or other measures.”

Sgt Helen Boyd of Wellington Police said speeding is taken seriously by police and anyone caught would face prosecution.
