PARENTS in Dulverton are being encouraged to have their say on plans to changes to two schools.

Somerset County Council is extending its consultation on whether to change the age range at Dulverton First School and Dulverton Middle School.

Proposals would see the first school take children aged three to seven and Dulverton Middle School, children aged seven to 11.

The changes would come into effect from September 2015.

Dulverton First School currently provides education for pupils aged four to nine and Dulverton Middle, nine to 13.

If the changes go ahead, Dulverton would lose its middle school with pupils having to go elsewhere.

The county council consulted on the changing age range and has now produced a report that was discussed with governors last Wednesday (May 21).

Although the council received 96 responses, only 18 were identifiable as being from parents of children who attend the two schools and Exford First School.

Governors say they want to have a ‘greater and clearer understanding of parents’ views.’

The consultation has now been extended until June 6. The further information will be fed into the decision making process.

Dave Smith, chair of governors said: “It is essential that a decision of such importance is based on as secure an evidence base as possible.

“We hope parents will respond in large numbers so that their collective view is clear.”

Cllr Frances Nicholson added: “I do encourage as many parents as possible to respond.

“It is absolutely crucial that everyone involved should be able to have their say.”
