A DRIVER had a lucky escape on Wednesday when the car he was driving caught fire at a garage forecourt in Cullompton.
Fire crews from Cullompton were called to a car fire at a garage forecourt on Wednesday afternoon at the Culm Valley Filling Station, Willand Road.
The driver, who had been using the petrol pumps, drove his car as far away from the garage as possible before exiting.
Staff at the garage were quick to flee to safety after the vehicle burst into flames.
One fire appliance from Cullompton and one from Tiverton were sent to the scene - and on their arrival crews confirmed one car well alight on the filling station forecourt.
Crews went to work with two Breathing Apparatus Wearers and one Hose Reel Jet.
The fire was extinguished using two Breathing Apparatus Wearers, two Hose Reel Jets and Small Tools.
The car was destroyed and the fire was believed to be accidental.
