PEOPLE in Taunton and Wellington are being offered up to £500 off their council tax bills if they install solar power systems on their homes.
The pilot scheme, run by Taunton Deane Council in partnership with British Gas, could be rolled out nationwide if successful.
Cllr Mark Edwards, Deane executive councillor for housing services, said solar panels do not generate greenhouse emissions and can cut energy bills.
He added: "We're extremely pleased that British Gas has singled out Taunton Deane as the place to pilot the solar scheme for the benefit of our residents who are ready to take the plunge to even greener homes."
The council and British Gas already offer grants of £100 off council tax bills for householders installing home insulation.
Homeowners interested in the scheme should call 0845-9717731 (quoting TDBC) to book an insulation survey.
