ALL over Taunton Deane tomorrow (May 7), people will be taking to the polls to vote in the election, and one Taunton primary school have been taking part in their own tightly fought political battle.

Year 6 pupils at Blackbrook Primary have been running a mock-election, stimulating great interest and excitement throughout the school.

The Hansard Society provides resources for schools to run these political campaigns and the school’s results have been added to school results across the country.

Four of the political parties were represented in the mock-election and students engaged fully in the election spirit.

Over a two week period, the children wrote and presented election manifestos, canvassed supporters, made speeches and took part in political hustings.

All of the staff and pupils were given the opportunity to place their vote into an actual ballot box just like in the real election.

Headteacher Barney Rycroft said: "It has been a brilliant way of engaging all pupils in the political process.

"The children have listened to well crafted arguments on issues such as the economy and the environment.

"It has been a fantastic starting point for teachers to guide pupils to learn about political systems in other parts of the world as well."

At Blackbrook, the Green Party narrowly won a hard fought contest.
