A POLICE firearms team swooped on a quiet street amid fears that a man living there had a handgun.

They took up position outside a house in Grays Terrace, Taunton, shortly before midnight on Friday, June 19.

They had been called to an address in the street after a man staying in a homeless hostel claimed he had been assaulted.

The victim said he had received cuts to his face after being hit by an object over an allegation he owed his attacker £50, according to police.

Officers were then informed that the alleged attacker was in the White Hart pub in nearby East Street, where he was arrested in possession of a knife and what are believed to be drugs.

A search was then carried out of the property in Grays Terrace, where officers found an air rifle.

Police say the 48-year-old suspect was bailed after being interviewed at Taunton Police Station on suspicion of assault, a firearms offence and possession of a knife and drugs.
