SPORTING legend Sir Garfield Sobers visited Taunton School for a special cricketing afternoon today, Monday, June 29.

Sobers is viewed as one of the greatest all-rounders in cricket history, with over 8,000 Test runs at a 57.78 average and over 200 Test wickets at an average of 34.

The programme of events started with coaching sessions on the Front for children from Taunton Prep School and three local primary schools – Parkfield, North Town and Cotford St Luke.

They were run by the school’s Head of Cricket Development, Marcus Trescothick, who is also Somerset CCC’s captain.

He was assisted by the school’s other coaches, including Marcus Harris who also opens the batting for Western Australia and Perth Scorchers.

Afterwards, the children were able to meet Sobers, obtain his autograph and have photographs taken with him.

The afternoon concluded with a question and answer session in the Old Library attended by senior students, staff, parents and members of the public.
