TAUNTON School has started the new academic year with state-of-the-art science facilities following the completion of a £2million refurbishment project.
The main science department in the senior school has had a complete overhaul, while two new science labs have been completed and opened at Taunton School International.
Head of Science Dr James Penny said: “Our labs have benefited from a complete refit with consequent huge advantages to this successful department, which is now a much better environment in which to teach and study.”
Work has included the incorporation of gas and electricity at every student work station, so classes can now occupy the whole lab space during practical work with greater safety as well as having more room in which to work.
“Not only are lessons helped, but there is more space to allow project work and clubs, which are steadily increasing,” added Dr Penny.
New fume cupboards are not only safer but also allow clearer views of the work under way, helped by several mobile fume cupboard units which allow a class to view from all sides in safety.
The extensive work has even included the provision of a biology garden, thanks to PTA funding, which is producing bananas this year.
Meanwhile, over at Taunton International School, off Greenway Road, work began in January on an extension to the existing building housing the TSI Hall and ICT suite while the new labs were completed a week before the start of term.
Principal Adrian Hallworth said: “We have seen interest in science grow considerably over recent years, particularly, I believe, as a result of the growing popularity of the IB Diploma.
“Having these labs has meant we are able to increase our science provision by 25%, which is fantastic news.”
The upgraded science facilities can be viewed at the Taunton School Open Morning this Saturday, October 3, from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
