A GROUP of people in Watchet are attempting to force a local referendum on controversial plans for the development of the town's East Wharf.

The group has posted notices in the town announcing a public meeting next Thursday, May 17, at which they hope to get popular support for the poll.

Speaking for the group, which includes Watchet businessman John Richards, Chris Danby of Watchet Boat Owners Association, and John Nash, curator of Watchet Boat Museum, local resident Sam Westmacott said: "The district council does not have to pay attention to the results of any such referendum, but it would be a bold council that went against the views of the electorate."

Developers Urban Splash, in partnership with West Somerset council, which owns the site, want to build a six-storey metal and glass harbour side apartment block including 86 one- and two-bedroom apartments, commercial space designed to accommodate a bistro and retail units, and community space.

John Nash said: "We want to find out whether Watchet wants this development in its present form, or not."

Council spokesman Stacey Beaumont said: "Local electors may call for a Parish Poll but as this will cost the parish, in this case Watchet Town Council, in the region of £2,000, we would recommend that they make their feelings known to the planning authority in writing instead.

"However, if local electors wish for a parish poll, the council will accommodate them."

The public meeting is planned to take place at the Methodist Hall, Harbour Road, Watchet starting at 7pm.
