ON July 1 Taunton will officially become smoke free - which for most of you will be a blessing.

According to a survey published by the Department of Health, 43% of people in the South-West say that a smoke-filled atmosphere is the biggest turn-off for going into a pub or bar.

And with under 50 days to go until smoke-free England becomes a reality, the Government is launching a national advertising campaign to remind the public what the legislation will mean when it comes in to force.

The survey of 1,700 adults shows that nearly three quarters (72%) of people in the South-West would rather spend the evening in a smoke-free venue, than one where smoking is allowed, and 91% now consider lighting-up in a non-smoking place unacceptable.

Dr Gabriel Scally, regional director of public health at NHS South-West said: "At present non-smokers are suffering ill health if they are forced to work in a smoky atmosphere such as a pub or restaurant. Smoke-free public places and workplaces will protect everyone from the harmful effects of second hand smoke whether they are working or socialising, therefore recognising a person's right to be protected from harm and enjoy smoke-free air. The clean air will particularly benefit those people with common chest diseases such as asthma.

"It is vital that all businesses comply with the new legislation, as they may be liable to penalties for those that break the law."
