MULTI-million pound Lidl store opened in Taunton at 8am today (Thursday, December 10).

Cut-price operator Lidl shut its Wood Street outlet at 6pm yesterday to move into premises on the site of the former Taunton Youth and Community Centre, in Castle Street, Tangier.

The venture has created 13 new jobs and boasts a 1,286sq ft bakery, seven tills, 71 parking spaces and dedicated bike parking.

Lidl UK’s property director James Mitchell said: "We would like to thank all those who have played a part in bringing this new Lidl store to Taunton.

"It is wonderful for us to be able to create more jobs and investment opportunities in the area, and we can’t wait to start serving our multi-award winning products to the local community.”

Lidl, whose new store is across the road from the existing Tesco supermarket, owns another store in Roman Road.

The Wood Street premises will be bulldozed to make way for retirement homes.
