THE new leader of Taunton Deane Borough Council, Cllr Ross Henley, helped lead a protest against Somerset County Council's bid for a unitary authority today.

Cllr Henley, accompanied by Cllr Duncan McGinty, leader of Sedgemoore District Council and Cllr Ken Maddock, leader of Mendip District Council, chaired a press conference to the media and councillors at the Castle Hotel in Taunton.

They, along with the South Somerset and West Somerset district council's are concerned by the county council's application to central government for unitary status, and are launching a poll to gather the views of the public.

After the press conference, councillors accompanied by the historical figure Judge Jeffies' who is remembered for his part in the Bloody Assizes' walked to the County Council and presented a letter addressed to the County leader Cllr Jill Shortland asking for her to adhere to the results of the poll.
