THE Ven John Reed is retiring as Archdeacon of Taunton at the end of June, when he will be 65.

He came to the diocese of Bath and Wells in 1986, when he was appointed rector of Timsbury and Priston, taking on the role of chaplain for rural affairs in the Bath Archdeaconry the following year.

He became rector of the Ilminster and District Team Ministry in 1991 and took on his current post in 1999.

Mr Reed said: "At all times throughout my ministry I have striven to support and encourage all those who seek to be a lively and effective part of what I always refer to as ‘that offering of love’, which is the Church.

"The Bath and Wells diocese is very blessed by thousands of dedicated and faithful Christians who make it especially warm and loving.

“Few people really know the full extent of daily prayer and service given by thousands around our parishes, schools and hospitals by Christians who quietly offer what they can with Christ-like love.

"They are the heart of the matter and I feel so privileged to know them and to have supported them in any way I could”.

The Bishop of Bath of Wells, the Rt Rev Peter Hancock, said: “I speak for all of us from across the whole diocese when I say that John and (his wife) Gill are going to be greatly missed when he retires.

"The contribution that John has made to the lives of many of us as colleagues, clergy, churchwardens and parishes is immeasurable.

"He has given outstanding service throughout his whole ministry and his friendship, humour and faithful service have touched us all.

“He has made a particular impact in South and West Somerset, where I know he will be long remembered.

"I wish to express my deep appreciation for John and Gill’s friendship and service and to wish them the Lord’s blessing when retirement arrives.”
