A NEW state-of-the-art clubhouse, modern floodlights and upgraded tennis and basketball courts could be set for Minehead Recreation Ground.

Members of the local community will have the chance to peruse through plans for the potential new facilities during a consultation being held next Thursday.

Minehead Town Council have commissioned Colin Johnson from Somerset Activity & Sports Partnership (SASP) to deliver proposals which will give Minehead FC state of the art modern changing and social facilities for its senior and junior members.

The plans include new LED floodlights and an upgrade of the existing tennis courts and Multi Use Games Area to encourage more active recreation at the Rec.

The new social area will be large enough to host community groups in need of a base for day time or specific evening use.

The new building (once planning permission is granted and funding sourced and approved) would be built alongside the existing one and once completed the old building would be demolished.

It is estimated the new clubhouse would cost around £320,000, and funding will be sought from Sport England and the FA among others.

Minehead Town Council have already invested in a new play area and public toilet facilities at the Recreation Ground and it is hoped that the upgrade will encourage more community use of the site.

Local architect Louise Crossman has drawn up the plans and members of her team will be available on the day to answer any queries people may have.

The plans will be available to look at between 3pm and 8pm on Thursday. June 23 at the current Minehead Football Club facilities on Irnham Road.

As reported in last week's Gazette, the council is taking the first steps toward a plan to put a community swimming pool in where the current clubhouse stands.

A community meeting about the swimming pool is being held today (Thursday, June 16) at the Beach Hotel in Minehead at 8pm.
