AFTER reading last week’s articles and letters in last week’s County Gazette, it would seem that nobody voted to Brexit, but as we know this is not true, as Taunton Deane voted for it.

We started the count down for the referendum with top politicians trying to convince the country to leave or stay we now have the same politicians and celebrities saying that the result was not right and we got it wrong and the 17 million who voted for Brexit either had a racial reason or were incapable of making a rational decision.

What absolute rubbish. If we must put the blame on anybody then it should be placed on the European Union itself for failing to convince the majority of British people to stay in.

I was one of the many people that voted in the last referendum when we joined the European Economic Community(EEC) on the understanding that we were joining a free trade area which nobody could find a problem with, but over the last 40 years this free trade area has become a monetary and political union, but no one seemed to know what they wanted.

Was it to be like the USA with a full constitution and bill of rights? Or What seems to have happened we have gone more to the former Soviet Union (USSR), with decisions being made by a few?

Surely, if we had wanted to become a federation of states the first thing we should have had was a constitution and then the president should be elected by the people of the EU and all members of the executive, which is the European Commission, should have been elected by the individual states?

Then, maybe, the result would have been different.

As things are, we in the United Kingdom vote for our regional members of the European Parliament, who then go to Brussels and try to affiliate themselves with members from other states who may have a similar point of view but may not be what people in the UK would want.

We now have a number of people calling for a new referendum because they thought we got the wrong result but I was under the impression that we were a democracy and who gets past the post first wins.
