SEVENTY riders battled their way around the demanding roads between Wheddon Cross, Luckwell Bridge and Winsford during the first running of the Stella Farrell Exmoor Grand Prix.

The 52 mile race was won by Yeovil's Daniel McQuillan riding for Tri UK, while Minehead Cycling Club's Graham Collins finished as the first local rider in 18th following a spirited chase.

The race is named after Minehead resident Stella Farrell, 90, who is one of the town's most successful ever sportswomen.

Stella was a prolific racer in the 1940s and 1950s, winning multiple national championships and holding various record.

Tanks Direct riders Steve Toogood and Phil Walter were the second and third local riders to finish while fourth local rider William Fuest was happy just to have completed his first ever cycle race.

Minehead Merlins under 16s Cycling Club held a series of mini races around the Wheddon Cross Sports Ground for youngsters alongside the main race, ending in time for the youngsters to be able to cheer the senior riders across the finish line.

Following the success of this inaugural event it is hoped the race will become an annual event to run alongside the hugely successful Tanks Direct Porlock Hill climb which takes place on Sunday, September 25.

This has established itself as a prestige event attracting both male and female national champions and Olympic riders.
