WORK has started on a new development of nine affordable rental homes in Priory Bridge Road, Taunton.

Social housing provider Stonewater is working with Taunton Deane Borough Council and regional contractors RG Spiller Ltd, to deliver the scheme which will provide a mix of three one-bedroom, two-people apartments and six two-bedroom, three-person apartments for affordable rent

The new development is being built on a former brownfield site.

Stonewater development manager said: “There is an urgent need for good quality one- and two-bedroom affordable rental homes in Taunton where local people - particularly younger groups - are being forced out of the community because they cannot afford the high cost of renting privately.

“Developments like this one not only provide well-designed affordable housing where it’s needed most in the community, but the money invested into building these homes will find its way around the local economy several times over, creating local jobs and sustainable communities for the future.”

The new energy-efficient homes are conveniently located within easy walking distance of Taunton town centre and the main shopping area, railway station, buses and local businesses and services.

Cllr Terry Beale, Deane executive councillor for housing services, said: "Providing affordable homes in Taunton Deane is a top priority for the council and we are delighted to be working with Stonewater to provide much-needed housing close to the centre of town with all the facilities nearby.”

The new housing community in Priory Bridge Road follows another Stonewater development of 26 affordable homes in Henlade which is due for completion later this year.

Stonewater also owns a mix of 58 houses for affordable rent and shared ownership at the The Heathfields, a new development in Monkton Heathfield.
