THE countdown is nearly over for the opening of the new Wellington Wetherspoon.

On Tuesday, August 30, The Iron Duke will be opening it’s doors.

JD Wetherspoon has spent £2.3 million developing the new pub, at the site of the old Town Hall Building in Fore Street, which was built in 1833.

The new pub is named after Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington. The ‘Iron Duke’ twice held office as Prime Minister but is best remembered in the town as the general who defeated Napoleon, commemorated by the Wellington Monument.

Pub manager Mat Turner said: “Myself and my team are looking forward to welcoming customers into the pub and we are confident that it will be a great addition to the Wellington community.”

The pub will be open from 8am until midnight Sunday to Thursday and 8am until 1am on Friday and Saturday. Food will be served from opening until 11pm.

Children will be welcome in the pub until 9pm throughout the week. Features include one bar, a roof-top beer garden and a side roof-top terrace. as well as being wheelchair accessible.

Historic photos and details of Wellington’s history will be on display as well as pictures of the town’s best features.
