HAPPY New Year? More like unhappy poo year in a Taunton park.

Denise Gage has complained of overflowing dog mess bins, with bags containing the mess littered on the ground in Victoria Park.

And to make matters worse, she says there is a lot of broken glass outside the toilets and by the children's play area.

"It's disgusting," said Mrs Gage, who lives in Priory Avenue, which backs onto the park.

"I spoke to the council about it last week and they said they couldn't do anything until after the festive period.

"Nothing has been done to clear up the park since before Christmas. It's a health hazard and the glass near a children's play area is dangerous.

"I exercise my two greyhounds in the park, but when I pick up their mess, there's nowhere to put it."

A Taunton Deane Borough Council spokeswaomn said: "Our teams worked over the Christmas break keeping our parks and open spaces clean and well maintained.

"Victoria Park litter bins were emptied daily including Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s day and the dog bins are emptied twice each week.

"However our parks were used much more frequently over the Christmas break with dog walking particularly popular and this spike in usage has led to our normal collection routine unable to cope with the quantity of waste.

"We would like to apologise for any problems encountered and thank those responsible dog walkers who take the trouble to pick up their pets' mess and dispose of it properly."

People with concerns should contact the council on 01823 356356 and it will do its best to respond promptly. In the case of broken glass being reported the council aims to respond within two hours.
