A BUSY Taunton town centre road will be partially closed in the evenings as part of a major roadworks scheme.
Somerset County Council will turn the stretch of road between Shuttern and Mansfield Road, which includes St Mary Street and Billetfield and Upper High Street, into a one-way system for 10 days from January 30.
The one-way system will be in operation from 6.30pm until 11.30pm, in a bid to ease disruption, and will be fully reopened in the day.
Engineers will be carrying out essential repairs to the road during that time, after a number of "significant" potholes and cracks in the road were discovered.
A one-way system will be in place with westbound traffic continuing to use the A38, while eastbound traffic will be diverted along Corporation Street and East Street.
Cllr David Fothergill, Somerset County Council’s cabinet member for Highways, said: “This stretch of the busy A38 is clearly in need of repairs with significant cracking and a number of potholes.
“It’s never easy to repair busy town centre roads without an impact on residents, businesses, commuters or shoppers, but we’ve done our best to minimise disruption by working off-peak hours and avoiding a full road closure.”
