Taunton and Wellington Keyboard Club

IAN House was the guest artist at the Taunton and Wellington Keyboard Club On January 26.

Playing on a Yamaha Tyros 3 without written musical scores he gave an unusual concert on this state-of-the-art keyboard. Alternating between slow tempo melodies and then fast accented base rhythms together with block chords and embellished melodies, he maintained good audience rapport throughout the concert.

The repertoire was certainly modern with only one standard from the 1930-1960 era that club members are so often regaled with in concerts.

Four highlights during the evening were a most rousing March, an American marching band could easily have been in the concert hall such was the zest and gusto produced with full brass band. Then an Elvis Presley number belted out with good volume.

Amazing grace followed with much registration variation and voice part using the Tyros voice register. For semi classical music the Elizabethan Serenade by Ronald Binge, most attractive in its variable key signature repeats.

The evening concluded with ‘Tequila’ played in the style of Stephan Grappelli with the Tyros at its best, then an Irish folk dance fiddle and bass which was totally captivating. Chairman Graham Glew gave a vote of thanks for this popular performer.

The next concert is to be on February 23 when Paul Roberts will play at The Lawns Social Club, Mary Street, Taunton at 7.45 pm. Visitors and guests are welcome.
