Transition Town Taunton

FOUR Taunton Deane transition groups joined forces to show the film Before The Flood at the Taunton Quaker Meeting House.

In the film, Leonardo DiCaprio, as United Nations Messenger of Peace on Climate Change, embarks on a three year journey from the remote wastes of Greenland to burning forests of Sumatra to the halls of the Vatican and explores climate change’s devastating impact on the planet.

He speaks to activists, scientists and world leaders, delving into the causes of the crisis and uncovering potential solutions to it and seeks an answer to the question: Can we act before it is too late?

Anyone who has seen this film can be left in no doubt that climate change is real and devastating, that global temperatures (both land and sea) are rising rapidly due to the activities of humans and that urgent action is needed now to halt this trend before it is too late.

Around 70 people came to see the film and to take part in the ensuing debate. There was general agreement that we all need to be more engaged in raising awareness of the dangers of global warming, in taking personal action to reduce our own carbon footprint and in making change happen both by demanding political action and by taking direct action such as investing in alternative, green energy.

Transition groups across Somerset will be arranging more film shows, talks and debates in the coming year. These are open to everyone and we would encourage more people to come along and share information and ideas as to what action we, as individuals and groups, can take to make a difference.
