Sampford Arundel WI
IN the UK, every six seconds someone phones Samaritans; every 90 minutes someone ends their own life.
These were the statistics Simon and Emily from Taunton and Somerset Samaritans reported to Sampford Arundel WI at their July meeting.
The mission of Samaritans is that fewer people die from suicide, and it provides a 24-hour service, seven days a week.
It is a safe place to talk and email, SMS, face-to-face, or letter, as well as phoning; the volunteers listen without judgement.
Volunteers also work in prisons and at festivals.
Callers do not have to be contemplating taking their own life, and there are many reasons for them to call.
Volunteers come from all walks of life; Simon and Emily felt they were well supported within the branch and that being a volunteer was a privilege.
Open information evenings are held monthly to which anyone wanting to know more about being a volunteer.
The Taunton and Somerset branch costs £30,000 annually to run and receives no state or local council funding.
An inspiring presentation.
Lots of dates and events coming up in the summer months - all the interest groups will be meeting and there will be a walk round Wellington, followed by a meal (of course!).
Most important is the village fete on July 22. Entries for the flower show and provision of cakes for the stall, please.
