THE MAJOR roadworks planned for the A39 at Dragon Cross next month have been postponed.

Vital drainage work had been planned to take place from Monday, November 20, but following consultation with the community this has been put back into the new year.

Somerset County Council needs to carry out drainage improvements on the key route due to historic problems with flooding.

The work is complex and the road is a narrow so a temporary road closure is required to keep the workforce and travelling public safe. However, there are no obvious alternative routes, particularly for large and heavy vehicles.

Somerset County Council has now decided to postpone the work until after Christmas.

Cllr John Woodman, Somerset County Council Cabinet member for Highways, said: “There is never a good time to carry out roadworks, but particularly when it’s a very busy road with very few alternatives.

“However, we do listen to feedback from our communities and I’m pleased we’ve been able to put this work on hold for now. I hope this decision will be welcomed and we will provide details of the rearranged scheme as soon as they are confirmed with our contractor.”

A separate overnight resurfacing scheme on the A39 near Washford Cross will still take place as planned during the week beginning Monday 20 November.

The A39 east of Washford Cross will be closed from 7pm to 7am on 20/21 November with the A39 west of Washford Cross closed from 7pm to 7am on 22/23/24 November.

Suggested diversion routes can be found at www.travelsomerset.co.uk/roadworks or will be clearly signposted on site.
