AROUND 50 people have been arrested across Avon and Somerset today (Thursday) for failing to attend court or being wanted by police.

During the 'day of action', officers gave unsuspecting offenders a surprise wake-up call as they knocked doors and executed arrests.

Around 50 people were arrested during the operation, which was supported by chief officers.

Those apprehended in the crackdown will now be placed before the courts.

ACC Steve Cullen said: “Today’s operation is about high visibility, high impact policing to show criminals in the Avon and Somerset area that there is no hiding place for those who choose to follow a life of crime.

“We hope that this operation today reassures the public that at all times we remain committed to keeping our communities safe.

“Obviously we work closely with our communities across Avon and Somerset who continue to be our eyes and ears, providing us with information which helps us to bring offenders to justice.”

Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens said: “Avon and Somerset remains a safe place to live, however it is right that the Constabulary target criminals who are causing the most concern in proactive days of action.

“I hope this shows local people that the police are listening, responding and putting an end to the activities that are a detriment to the quality of life in our local communities.”
