NEW homes and holiday accommodation could be built on the site of a former primary school forced to close due to falling pupil numbers.

A planning application to convert and extend the former Burrowbridge Primary School into four homes has been submitted on behalf of Dean Development (Wessex) Ltd to Taunton Deane Borough Council.

Under the proposals, an existing store at the School Lane site would be extended to provide holiday accommodation and a carport.

Permission was granted three years ago for two homes, with work starting two months ago, while plans for 25 homes, open space and allotments at the adjacent former Gillards Transport depot were approved in 2013.

The original school buildings date from the late 19th Century and the existing buildings and site were bought from joint owners Somerset County Council and the Diocese of Bath and Wells by the applicants last year.

The premises were used as a temporary flood relief centre during the devastating floods on the Somerset Levels in 2014.

A spokesman for the applicants said: "The proposals incorporate three residential units within the converted school buildings and a new extension added to the existing school building to accommodate one further residential unit.

"The existing brick store building will be converted and extended to accommodate a new holiday accommodation and a new carport constructed for use by all units."
