ONE person has been injured after a major house fire broke out in Holway Avenue, Taunton.

Six fire crews - from Taunton, Wellington, Bridgwater and Burnham - were called to the blaze at just before 5pm this evening (Tuesday, August 7).

Police and ambulance teams have also been at the scene and Holway Avenue, as well as part of Holway Road, was closed off at 6.30pm as emergency services continued their work.

At around 8.30pm, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said one person had been treated for minor burns.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen billowing above Holway Avenue.

It was unclear on arrival if there were any occupants still inside the property, and firefighters donned breathing apparatus to check the building.

The fire was developing throughout the entire building at around 5.30pm, and the firefighters continued to battle the blaze using two main jets, a hose reel jet, a safety jet and a fog spike jet, along with a hydraulic platform, thermal imaging camera and positive pressure ventilation fan.

Western Power were asked to attend to isolate electrical supplies to the property.

Firefighters were continuing to battle the blaze at 9pm.

A fire service spokesman said: "Crews still fighting the fire using three main jets and a jet from the aerial appliance.

"The gas main caught alight, and the gas board are on scene isolating the supply to the property.

"A building inspector is also on scene to check for structural stability.

"Relief crews have been mobilised from Cullompton, Tiverton and Somerton.

"One person presented themselves to paramedics with minor burns from the incident, and were treated on scene."
