THE A303 has now re-opened following ths morning's accident.

POLICE have given more details of this morning's serious crash on the A303.

Officers are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the collision or spotted the cars before the crash.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "We're appealing for witnesses following a serious collision on the A303 near Ilminster this morning.

"At about 8.10am a red Hyundai i10 and a silver Ford Fiesta were involved in a collision.

"We'd like to speak to anyone who may have seen the incident or the cars beforehand."

People should call 101 and quote log 299 of today (August 19).

Motorists are still advised to avoid the area as the road will remain closed until this afternoon.

Meanwhile, Sarah Hooper is warning oo the best route to get onto the A303 without getting caught in traffic snarl ups.

She said: "If you're trying to get onto the A303, the best route is through Bathpool, through Creech St Michael, past Ruishton, head up towards the crossroads on the A358, turn left and head onto the Aa303.

"Direct traffic heading directly onto A358 causing gridlocks in all directions - just to let anyone know if you're heading this way."

FIRE crews were called to assist other agencies at the road traffic collision near Ilminster this morning.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said "multiple persons were believed to be trapped".

One crew from Ilminster, one from Chard, two from Taunton and the specialist rescue tender from Yeovil attended.

The spokesman added: "On arrival the crews confirmed a road traffic collision involving two vehicles with two persons trapped.

"Crews used two sets of hydraulic cutting equipment to release one casualty from each vehicle.

"The incident was left in the hands of the police."

THE A303 is closed near Ilminster following a serious collision earlier today.

Police say the road between Horton Cross and Upottery is likely to remain closed for most of the day and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

The incident involved a head-on smash involving a number of vehicles at the Horton Cross roundabout at around 8.10am.

A diversion has been set up between the A358 Southfield Rounadbout and Broadway Hill, in Horton.

Drivers are warned that traffic flow is slow in the area.
