ANYONE wishing to become a member of the Exmoor National Authority now has the chance to apply.

Environment Secretary Hilary Benn has called for applications to become members of several National Park Authorities including vacancies for two new members in Exmoor.

National Park Authorities work to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage within the Park's boundaries and to help improve public understanding and enjoyment of the area.

John Dyke, chairman of Exmoor National Park Authority said: "Members appointed by the Secretary of State have always played an invaluable part in the successful operation of the Exmoor National Park Authority.

"They have brought an external dimension and this has helped mould the decision-making process into one which pays heed to the wider national picture as well as to that of the local community who live in or have to make their living in the Park."

The successful appointees will be expected to provide a national voice, and take a particular interest in strategic issues such as responsibility for conservation, recreation, planning, access, land management and resource issues.
