HOW on earth Teresa May, the Shadow Leader of the Commons and the local Conservative spokesman for Taunton had the bare faced cheek to stand outside a Taunton post office and campaign against post office closures is beyond me.

During their period in office the number of Crown post offices fell from 1,580 to 606 (down 974) and the number of sub-post offices fell from 21,213 to 17,731 (down 3,482).

In other words, nearly four and a half thousand post offices were shut down and not replaced.

By 1995, the Treasury had taken £1 billion from the Post Office and over the next two and a half years, an additional £1 billion was taken from the income received by the Post Office.

Had that money been used to invest in the network we may not be in the position we find ourselves in now where the government is planning a further 2500 post office closures.

In my opinion this visit was nothing more than an opportunistic attempt by the conservative spokesman for Taunton to jump onto the post office bandwagon.
