BRIDGWATER star Mark Godbeer has announced his retirement from MMA after an "epic" 10-year journey.

Godbeer, who has had 17 fights across his career including four under the UFC banner, released the following statement on Facebook yesterday:

"I'd like to thank you all for making the last ten years of my life an epic journey, but now it's time to give my time and energy into those around me that deserve it the most starting with my girls.

"I have achieved everything I set out to do and more... now it's time to give a little back to those that gave me so much whilst supporting me... my time in the 4oz mitts are done.

"The screeding rails are being dusted off. On to the next journey of my life. Much love, THE HAND."

Godbeer, 34, was due to fight Luis Henrique at UFC Fight Night 137 at the weekend.

He had attempted to make the drop to the light heavyweight division for the first time, but was forced to withdraw from the card due to injury.

That withdrawal means his UFC record stands at 2-2, with his most recent bout a defeat against Dmitriy Sosnovskiy at London's 02 Arena in March.

Godbeer has always been proud of his Bridgwater roots and, prior to that bout in March, told the Mercury: "I've always had a great following from back home. It's always nice to hear local voices at my weigh-ins, and they always make some noise as Bridgy boys do!

"It can be quite overwhelming. People have been with me from my very first fight at Bridgwater Town Football Club right through to the biggest stage.

"I always feel as though I'm representing the town, as well as the UK, so it means a lot.

"My roots have got me where I am today. Even though I don't spend too much time at home at the moment - it's a short-lived career and I have to be away a lot - my kids and family are still in Bridgwater and I haven't forgotten my roots. Who wouldn't love Bridgwater?"
