WHAT are the council’s reasons for building flats at Coal Orchard without car space?
When, years ago, it was proposed to do this at the old cinema site, the then leader of the council said a survey had shown a big majority of cars which even then were filling the town centre were owned by residents.

Well, of course, but those who have a town centre residence, like me, don’t drive around the centre, it is those from the suburbs and surrounding villages and it is not proposed to deny them garages or space.
In a small town like Taunton with limited facilities and few buses, especially at night, a car is essential to attend events in, eg Wells, Yeovil or West Bay.
Of course, the council may intend to offer the flats to those unable to afford a car, but will the prices reflect this intention? I doubt it.
