THREE people have been arrested in Newport on suspicion of modern slavery offences following an investigation by the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority (GLAA).
A 36-year-old Latvian man, 55-year-old Lithuanian man and 53-year-old Lithuanian woman were arrested by GLAA officers at addresses east and south of Newport city centre on Tuesday, October 16.
All three have been released under investigation pending further enquiries.
A 27-year-old Latvian man was identified as a potential victim, with investigators believing that he has suffered from labour and financial exploitation. He has been safeguarded and has entered the government’s National Referral Mechanism, a framework for ensuring victims of modern slavery, human trafficking and labour exploitation are supported and given the help they require.
The operation was supported by neighbourhood officers from Gwent Police.
GLAA Senior Investigating Officer Andy Davies said: “Protecting victims and vulnerable workers is our main priority and we will not hesitate to go after criminals who exploit people for their labour.
“We are an intelligence-led organisation so I would encourage the public to report their concerns to us if they suspect someone is being exploited. Please call us on 0800 4320804 or email intelligence@gla.gov.uk with your suspicions. Your call could be the difference between a victim being rescued or continuing to be exploited.”
