CHARD’S professional boxer Paul Roberts returns to the ring on Saturday in Swansea.

Roberts, 23, is unbeaten with two wins and a draw from his first three professional bouts and takes on Adam Hutchinson as part of a ‘Young Guns’ show at the Llandarcy Academy of Sport this weekend.

The super bantamweight fighter has been training hard, gaining compliments from sparring partners including former Commonwealth champions Lee Haskins and Ash Lane.

Roberts will be raring to go, having been frustrated by his last two scheduled fights being cancelled at short notice, and he is set to be backed by around 60 supporters.

A coach is travelling from the Dolphin pub - for more information on that and buying tickets, call 07748 774039.

FIRE Virk, a talented 16-year-old at Chard, Ilminster & District Amateur Boxing Club, secured his latest Western Counties title on Saturday.

Virk defeated his Cheltenham-based opponent on points after a dominant display to seal his third title at Western Counties level.

Coach Keith Roberts said: “Fire did really well.

“His opponent was tall and rangy but Fire got stuck into him and was aggressive from the off.

“He deserved the victory.”

Virk now goes forward to a quarter-final in the national competition, which takes place this weekend.
