BRIDGWATER Arts Centre is set to close for up to six months in the new year so that urgent repairs can be carried out to the theatre roof.

The Arts Centre made the announcement on Facebook, stating that it would close from January 1, 2019.

According to the Bridgwater Arts Centre website, the closure for renovations is in place all the way through until the end of June.

A spokesman for Bridgwater Arts Centre said: "While work in the theatre is being carried out, we will also be taking the opportunity to refurbish a number of other, currently derelict spaces on site in order to bring them back into regular use.

"The centre will be open as usual to regular users, tenants, and hirers, where possible.

"As a Grade 1 listed building, and the oldest arts centre in the UK to have opened with Arts Council funding, it is vital that we safeguard the heritage of our building, and work towards establishing the centre as a creative space that can best serve the people of Bridgwater."

Luke Fothergill, a Bridgwater Arts Centre trustee, told the Mercury that there would be a general meeting with members and volunteers on Tuesday, December 4 where the detailed plans going forward would be discussed.
