FITNESS firm 1610 has joined forces with the NHS to spearhead a new health initiative to help prevent Somerset residents from developing Type 2 Diabetes.

It is the first national preventative initiative of its kind and works in partnership with GP’s and training facilitators to guide and educate participants in ways to reduce their blood sugar levels.

Four staff from Trinity Sports & Leisure in Bridgwater are the first 1610 staff who have received training to deliver the scheme which is being rolled out in other designated areas in Somerset as part of a phased approach.

The number of people diagnosed with Diabetes in the UK has doubled in the last 20 years and according to figures from NHS Digital, Diabetes prescriptions are now costing the NHS more than £1bn a year.
