AVON and Somerset Police have launched the month-long Operation Tonic targeting drink and drug drivers, including high visibility and covert patrols

Last winter's campaign saw 146 arrests and officers are warning offenders can face a fine of more than £2,500, a driving ban or even prison, potentially leading to a loss of independence, job and financial stability.

Supt Andy Williams, the force's head of road safety, said: "Driving is a liberty. It’s your choice to drink and drive and in doing so, you risk losing that liberty. Even being ‘slightly over’ the limit will still land you with a penalty if you’re caught."

People should call 999 if someone is currently driving under the influence or text 'drunk' to 07400-279101 with details of the car, location and driver in less urgent cases.
