CHARITY youth workers left 'devastated' after a break-in left them unable to carry out their vital community work are feeling more secure after a Somerset firm offered to help.

In September, thieves broke into the offices of Young Somerset (formerly Somerset Rural Youth Project), in Edington, stealing a range of resources including power tools, batteries, saws and socket sets.

An appeal was launched to raise funds following the break-in, which included a gofundme.com page and coverage in your County Gazette and other media.

Following the coverage Ben Turner, from Frome-based Active Fire and Security, got in touch with the charity and offered to put a new security system in place.

Ben said: "It was a pleasure to offer some help to a very worthy organisation whose work, I'm sure, is making a real difference to young people in our county.

"I'd like to thank Enterprise Security in Bristol who kindly offered equipment for the job at a vastly reduced rate."

The new alarm system has movement sensors across the ground floor and is linked to managers phones via an app, meaning that in the event of the alarm going off, they will be notified immediately.

Ben also fitted a range of CCTV cameras around the site, to provide additional coverage of the surrounding area.

Steve Baker, deputy chief executive of Young Somerset, said: “We have been overwhelmed with support following the break-in in September.

"It’s been so heart-warming to see how much people value our work, and we have been able to replace many of the tools that were lost.

"Having the added security of an alarm system and CCTV fitted by Active Fire and Security has given us additional reassurance, and we’re very grateful that Ben has been able to support our work in this way.”
