LAST year saw the largest throughput of sheep at Sedgemoor Auction Centre since it opened 10 years ago, with more than a quarter of a million head sold in 2018 alone.

Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt, which operates the market, located just off Junction 24 of the M5 motorway, North Petherton, Somerset, has seen its Saturday market flourish over time to become the largest sheep market in the South of England.

The market operates on Saturdays and Mondays with store and prime markets respectively.

Auctioneer Paul Ashton said: “The large numbers that pass through on a weekly basis ensure a large compliment of buyers and a consistent trade. In 2018 alone 89,000 store lambs and 70,000 cull ewes, together with seasonal entries of breeding ewes, couples, stock rams, orphan lambs and goats have passed through the gates on Saturdays. This was alongside 70,000 finished lambs that have been sold on Mondays during 2018 and enabled the total number of sheep sold since opening to pass the 2.5 million head mark.”

Head of Sedgemoor Auction Centre, Robert Venner, added: “We are extremely grateful to our vendors, purchasers, staff and the Mead family for supporting the market and making the centre such a huge success and wish them all a very happy and prosperous 2019.”
