TAUNTON councillors are set to have a 'confidential' discussion regarding which provider will run five leisure centres across the Deane.

The special full council meeting of Taunton Deane Borough Council is set to take place on Tuesday, January 22, from 6.30pm. But the press and public will be excluded from the room before the financial details are discussed.

Currently, Greenwich Leisure Ltd runs the facilities under the brand 'Better'.

The centres are Blackbrook Leisure Centre, Wellsprings Leisure Centre, Taunton Swimming Pool, the golf course and high ropes equipment at Vivary Park in Taunton, and Wellington Sports Centre.

The facilities are leased by the council to GLL, which has recently increased its membership prices by around £1 a month.

The contract with GLL is set to expire in July 2019, with a handful of providers hoping to take over from then, and GLL hoping to continue.

GLL had some troubles with one of the facilities last year, Blackbrook Leisure Centre, with visitors complaining about the cleanliness of the services. It forced the provider to bring in 'significant measures' to improve the standard.

Next weel's discussion will be held privately due to the information 'relating to the financial or business affairs of any particular person or authority'.

In a report submitted to the council in October last year, the timeline stated a decision would be made early in 2019, following a series of 'competitive dialogue sessions' to help make the decision.
